Overview
The device was created in response to the Museum of London Docklands' 'Transatlantic Slave Trade' exhibition. It reflects how enslaved people were viewed by West Indian trade merchants, seen solely as objects and merchandise. The device symbolises a cycle representing the many lost cultures and lives.

The Brief
The Museum of London Docklands is running its 'Transatlantic Slave Trade' exhibition and requires an artistic response to accompany the exhibit.
The Solution
The device is made up of a table, a cash machine, a shopping basket, and a heater. The cash machine prints out a database of enslaved people’s names along with their estimated cost. As the receipt passes over the heater, a reaction occurs, erasing the names and their history. The receipt continues to flow down the table, eventually falling into the shopping basket, completing the process.
